Archaeology at Fort Johnson - 2007

In 1901 Charleston tried to encourage trade with the Carribean by hosting the South Carolina Interstate and West Indian Exposition (http://www.scencyclopedia.com/west_indian_exposition.htm). The Quarantine station at Fort Johnson was very important in the sea going trade, especially as public health officials were learning more about disease and contagion with each passing year.
